Installation of Bundutop Bundutec tents

Bundutec Bundutop Electric rooftop tents require the sides of the tent to be supported. The tent can be installed with a maximum overhang at the ends of  500mm - Typically the tent will be best to sit on crossbars or racks of widths bigger than 1300mm (wider than most standard roof racks).

Through bolting detail:

The structure of the tent dictates the positions of suitable fixing points with the required strength for mounting. On the standard delux tents - the tent is drilled through the internal tent structure  at 1283mm wide - and then fastened to your rack, canopy or crossbars using 65mm long m6 or M8 (8mm) Bolts.
Most common roof racks and trade racks are only 1220mm wide, and are thus not wide enough to fit a bundutop tent - Please measure your rack width before attempting installation.

Fitting Bundutop tents to vehicles with gutter mount racks:

In the case of your vehicle having gutters for roof racks - ensure that the roof racks are installed level from front to rear. If they are not - they will have to be before you can install any tent.

If you're doing a fresh install - we'd recommend adjustable roof rack feet for guttered vehicles as they are height-adjustable, meaning that roof curvature can be compensated for and you will get a perfectly flat and level mounting surface. (We like the ARB Steel rack feet best for GU, GQ, Frontrunner aluminium rack feet  for other vehicles that don't have roof roll.)

3 Bars are sufficient as long as no more than 500mm of overhang is present. 4 bars are better in most cases - especially if the preference is for aluminium - as less load is placed on gutters. We can supply crossbars in either steel or aluminium if required - complete with rack feet to match your vehicle see our shop page for pricing on our Tough Touring 3 Bar roof rack

If your vehicle is a roof rail type vehicle but does not already have a rail or rack fitted - see our Vehicles fitted page for detail on recommended rails for your specific vehicle.

Fitting Bundutop tents to vehicles with existing Roof rails and rack:
A Bundutop tent's fixing point is at 1283 mm wide and will usually mean that you need a wider rack on your car. (Most manufacturers make racks 1220mm wide for roof-rail type vehicles). The racks themselves are often better off removed and 3 crossbars fitted to the roof rails instead, reducing weight on the roof.

Some racks are wide enough - and allow the best of both worlds - a rack, a tent on it, and when combined with a cradle mount - an option to hoist the tent off and on again when you want to use it. (The downside here is that this is getting expensive and heavy!)

The combination of Frontrunner slimline 2 rack - (1425 x 2300mm version) PLUS our Tough Touring cradle mount system works really well and allows a poleless awning to be fitted also independently from the tent.

Vehicles that have roof rails - tend to also be newer 4wd, and wind noise from racks can be noticeable when driving at highway speeds. See our section on 'vehicles fitted' and find your vehicle first to read up on best practice for your car.

Canopy Installation of a Bundutop Tent

Your canopy must be at least 1350mm wide on the top (Same as the width of the tent) and free of obstructions. Bundutop tents can overhang up to 500mm over the front or rear of a canopy unsupported - so typical dual cab canopies of 1600mm in length are OK for mounting.

Place the tent in position and then drill 4-6 mounting holes right through the tent and canopy and bolt them up together using large washers.

Apply Sikkaflex to the bolt heads to seal the mounts - the internal structure is not usually required, as the sandwiching of the tent and roof of canopy together strengthens both surfaces.

Tough Touring Cradle mounts:

These can be used on canopies - provided that over-centre latches are lockable type, and suitable mounting points for the latches (usually front and rear of canopy) are available for flush mount.

Dual-Cab Utes - Over Cab Installation:

For most dual-cab utes - by far the best position for installation of a rooftop tent is actually over the cab of the vehicle. (not the canopy)

  1. Over cab installations place the weight of the rooftop tent forward over the centre of the wheels - vastly reducing negative effects to the vehicles handling, body roll and climbing ability.

  2. When your tent is over the cab - you will still have almost full use of your rear tub/canopy for carrying gear.

  3. 'Step up' onto the tray, step onto a box then into your tent. No ladders required. Much safer.

  4. If you're also running a canopy - GREAT - You now have a platform to get up onto to turn around before negotiating ladders - also somewhere to store firewood etc.

  5. Superlight and economical way to avoid full-length racks and still allow for vehicle twist.

Over cab installation of the Bundutop requires at least three crossbars, in the case of Ford ranger, Toyota Hilux, Triton, Isuzu D-max, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara etc, we developed a cantilever bracket system that allows 4 crossbars to be fitted to the roof space. These Tough Touring cantilever roof load bars take the rack length footprint out to 1700mm - and position the tent well forward for ultimate offroad performance while still carrying your roof tent.

For Larger Dual cabs like the 79 series - ARB rack feet can be fitted to the gutter mount and tent to crossbars as per usual gutter mount installs.

Awnings (Even poleless awnings) can be mounted directly to the sides of the Bundutop with use of Tough Touring Awning to tent brackets

The Bundutop Bundutec Rooftop tent is an excellent design with great opportunities for the Addition of touring gear. Its brilliant design allows maximum use of space. Accessories can be added to the sides of the tent, freeing up valuable internal space in the vehicle. Typically, Touring vehicles will carry:

Dual Cab Utes fitting Bundutops will perform much better on and offroad when fitting RTT over the cab using our 'Tough Touring Cantilever roof bars" kit shown above and below on this Navara.
